Post-lunch, SCAA held its business meeting during which new officers were elected and the current president (Steve Smith) gave his parting remarks. I had the honor to be elected Vice-Chair/Chair Elect for the coming year. I'm looking forward to learning from the new president and other archivists around the state.
The meeting closed with a presentation from two members of Charleston Archival community on preserving and archiving the memorial site at the Emanuel AME Church--the site of the shooting of nine African-American worshippers this summer. It was a touching presentation as they discussed the specific issues presented by any memorial launched by a terrorist attack (citing the efforts of archivists in Boston after the Marathon bombing and Aurora after the theater shooting). They detailed the interactions between the church and the volunteer archivists, the types of materials they're organizing, and the preliminary technical solutions the group devised. Additionally they presented a brief timeline of when their work would be over so that the members of the church could move forward with whatever plan of action they decide to pursue.
Overall despite the need to postpone, the meeting was successful, interesting, and educational! I'll look forward to next year's!
