Second, I intend to write something. An article, documentation to be distributed, what-have-you, for the professional community. There are currently several possibilities, but obviously the one in the forefront of my mind would be on using CollectiveAccess here at the SHPO to create the South Carolina Historic Properties Record!
On that note, SCHPR is pending. Our IT department has been working on settling the system in its new permanent server homes. Once that is complete and we've worked out the kinks, the website will be live. At this stage there will be mostly issues with the aesthetic and usability of the new website. We want to make sure it looks as similar as possible to the rest of the SCDAH webpages.
Third on my list of professional goals is to appropriately mentor one or more graduate students. I am in the process of reviewing applications for summer interns (up to 2) to aid in the digitization of the Archives' collection of SHPO site cards (>90,000 documents). This is quite the undertaking, and I'm pleased that we've had interest in the internship. I hope to help whoever we hire gain relevant experience in digitization projects, metadata, and some web development. I'd also like to encourage them to become more involved in various local professional organizations.
Here's to a new year and new goals. Hopefully, I'll be proud of what I've accomplished next year. On another note, I promise to make my next post somewhat more technical. At that point, I'll have more to discuss re: SCHPR.
Cheers!
